surprise
Shepherds advised of Christ's birth. I like the tiny flecks of gold leaf on the trees - I suppose they may be intended to represent dew-wet leaves reflecting the angel's glory, but to me they are also direct link with the christmas cards I made as a small child in the 1960s: dark green tree shapes with glitter sprinkled on them.
Detail of a Sienese painting, Musei Vaticani, Rome.
