Royal Tern with Crab (1 of 1)
Here’s a Royal Tern with a crab in its beak. I can’t help but wonder just how its chick is going to deal with that pointy crab. Both male and female Royals care for their chicks, calling to them on the way to the nesting area with nourishment. They nest in colonies called a crèche. The chicks I’ve watched remain in the dunes or near their edge until, when they are a little bigger, head for the tide pools, guarded by adults. It’s pretty funny watching the adults attempting to herd headstrong juveniles but, in a loose kind of way, it works. (Thalasseus maxima) (Sony a1, 200-600mm lens at 368mm, 1/4000 second, f/8, ISO 1000)
