Osprey Feeding Time (1 of 1)
Most of the Osprey chicks have fledged and the few I saw in the nests were quite well grown and about ready to take to the air. From a kayak, the angle to the nest is usually not the best but this particular nest was low and there weren’t any branches to block my view. Mom was preoccupied with feeding her chick, perhaps beyond what was necessary, and was thankfully ignoring me. When concerned, chicks flatten against the bottom of the nest but while eying me this chick was comfortable enough to stand. The bulge on the chick’s chest is called the crop which sticks out as it is filled with food. It looked to me like it was filled to capacity. It was a relatively quite day on the lake and I think Osprey season is about over for South Florida. Until next year then. (Osprey: Pandion haliaetus) (Sony a1, 200-600mm at 600mm, 1/1000 second, f/11, ISO 640)
