Three-toed Sloth (1 of 1)
This is a Three-toed Sloth from my recent trip to Costa Rica. There are also Two-toed Sloths which look quite similar but are larger and move faster and have only two claws on their arms. Both types have three claws on their legs. They live in the high canopy, only coming down to defecate. Why they feel the need to do that and run the risk of predation doesn't make sense to me, but that's evolution for you. If you have a theory, please share.
I added a Costa Rica 2023 gallery to my website, where there is also a gallery from an early trip. Here's the link if you are interested: mykey.smugmug.com/Galleries/Costa-Rica-2023/
(Brown-throated sloth - Bradypus variegatus)
Happy Valentine's day!
