Bellagio Fountains

I'm not really a big fan of Las Vegas - the extreme artificiality of the whole enterprise, with the reduced scale, faked versions of real things from the rest of the world; or the brazenness of the giant money-machine primed to suck up your money in the enormous casinos. It's not a place I would go just to enjoy but I've been there twice recently to play in volleyball tournaments.

That's why I was pleasantly surprised to discover how enjoyable the fountain show was at the Bellagio Hotel. There's a giant several acre lake (which really seems wrong in the middle of the Mojave Desert) and every 20 minutes or so music comes on and a massive choreographed spectacle erupts, quite literally, before a crowd of many hundreds. The variety of the shapes and their timing and interpretation of the music (pop or classical - I saw 3 different shows) is really well done. And now and then, the really huge jets will pump out ( with practically a crashing roar) enormous walls of water shooting over 100 ft in the air.

I left with a pleasant admiration for a well-executed spectacle.
