Promax System
For hopefully better flash photography I just bought the Lumiquest Promax system and an off-camera TTL flash cable.
Installed alone on your flash, with the flash pointing straight up, 80% of the light bounces off the ceiling and 20% is sent straight toward the subject for fill and to add catchlights to the eyes.
Then there are inserts: a white insert sends all the light toward the subject, but from a bigger, more diffuse apparent source than the flash alone. A silver metallic insert is designed to give more specular highlights, and a gold metallic insert is designed to warm up the light. It also came with a large soft white diffuser that fits over the front of the whole mess for the softest light.
The construction and quality seem first rate, and it comes with a handy wallet to hold everything.
I intend to use it as directed, but also with the flash facing forward, so that light is bounced directly down, onto macro subjects.
The off-camera flash cable is also for macro work, at least until I get a bracket for the camera.
We'll see how well it all works soon.
