A Dentist's Dream
We spent a few days in Mystic, Connecticut, USA & visited the aquarium on January 2, 2013. It was bitterly cold outside & not too many folks were there, but we saw some fun sights & had some friendly conversations with staff. This is one of three images. Several more will follow. This is a close-up view of Juno, a young male Beluga Whale who lives at the aquarium. He is very friendly/curious & spends a lot of time, right at the side of the viewing area, interacting with people. There are many uTubes of him, including this one, in which a mariachi band serenaded him!

Every now & then, Juno would engage in a behavior known as "jaw popping." He'd suddenly open his mouth wide, making a popping noise. It was quite startling, particularly when he was just on the other side of the glass from me! Although "jaw popping" can be interpreted as aggressive behavior or a negative reaction to noisy people tapping on the glass, I think that Juno, at least sometimes, was just doing it for fun--to make people jump! There were few people at the glass with us & none were being rude. Juno lives in a large pool, with two other Belugas, & has room to choose where he is--near the glass or far from it. He is a social being & it was hugely fun to interact with him! The plexiglass reflects, so, in this photo, it looks as if Juno is eating the world!
