A Call to Mobilize
"Gambling is a menace to society, deadly to the best interests of moral, social, economic, and spiritual life, and destructive of good government."
Thus begins a section from the Social Principles of The United Methodist Church. On most social issues, the official statements of our denomination seem to weigh and acknowledge more than one side; in the case of gambling, the stance is absolute.
Today, our district superintendent sent out an e-mail, asking which pastors in her district might be interested in forming a task force to determine how our churches should respond to the increasing presence of organized gambling.
We have a new casino down the road. I hit "reply" to the e-mail. I asked her to count me in.
