Enjoying The View

I stumbled upon this lone Bristlecone last weekend while looking for more trees up in the White Mountains. I had to bail on my original location as thunderstorms moved in and shrouded the 13,000 foot peaks around me in clouds and fog. As I headed lower, I pulled over to try to get some signal to check the weather and spotted a few trees out on the ridge. This one Bristlecone in particular stood out from the few that dotted the mountainside near where I was parked. What an incredible view this tree has enjoyed over the past thousand or so years. Long before the lights from the town of Bishop gleamed up from the valley below every night, this tree looked out over the Palisades and a host of other peaks across the valley. It was hard not to be jealous as I headed back to the FJ for the long, bumpy ride back to a paved road and the 6 hour drive home.
