Contemplating Zen At Corona Del Mar

If you've been following my photostream here on Flickr for any amount of time, you'll probably recognize this view as Corona Del Mar is easily one of my favorite local places to shoot in Southern California . On this particular night, I ignored the wimpy 15% forecast predicted by Skyfire and went instead with Sunsetwx which had almost all of Southern California lit up in red. I was feeling pretty good until I got halfway down and realized that my tripod was still sitting on my kitchen table. At that point, I knew there was no way to make it back to my house and get down to the beach in time. And why go down to shoot a sunset without a tripod? I mean...what's the point?

The point is...sometimes it's good to get out of the house and to drive down to the beach, to let go of all of the stress...and just listen to the waves and contemplate your life. Not all sunsets are meant to be shot. Some are simply there for no other reason but to allow you to stare in awe and wonder.

And....I was doing pretty well in that department as it looked like I was going to get skunked again. I was ready to accept that since I didn't have a tripod and I was instead concentrating on my Zen moment, thinking of James Taylor lyrics while watching the last of the light drain from the sky.

And then suddenly the sky turned a slight shade of pink in the distance…and I began to twitch.

And then it exploded in all directions at once.

And since I, being no fool, still brought my camera, I dropped the Zen thing in a big hurry and began shooting my butt off. I mean...the Zen thing is cool and all but you can't honestly expect me to sit and just enjoy a sky like THIS!!

LOL...there may come a time in my life when I have one of those "Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" moments where you put the camera down and realize that particular moment is there for YOU. I'm not quite there yet. In the mean time, I will be out there with my camera, whenever I can...tripod or no, waiting for the next one. :)
