First Light On Lake Powell

After a nice sunset at Horseshoe Bend, David Columbo and I headed off to McDonalds in Page to brainstorm sunrise the next morning. I was clearly out of my depth here as the only shooting locations that I was aware of near Page were the Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe, neither of which was going to do us much good for sunrise. We both took advantage of the free wifi and began to figure out our options. I was hoping we could find something out on Lake Powell as I love shooting over water for sunrise whenever I get the chance. Finally, after about an hour of scrounging, we came upon a suitable location. Skyfire was showing a 70% chance of a decent sunrise, but the location looked like it would involve some serious 4 wheel driving.....at 4 AM. It looked like a 90 minute drive the next day, so we headed off to the Walmart parking lot for some much needed sleep. Dave had a pretty good set up in his Lexus GX, but I was in my Prius. I wasn't set up to use my make shift bed in the back of the car since I had brought my camping gear, but I popped in my window blackouts, cranked up the AC ( I think it was still in the 90’s at 11 PM), and actually got a few hours of sleep.

At 4 AM, David and I set off for Lake Powell. The road we were on was definitely not meant for a Prius, so I ditched the Prius shortly after going off pavement, and we crossed a good sized creek and headed on in David's Lexus. I kept mumbling to myself as it looked like all the good clouds were headed in the wrong direction. We only saw one vehicle on our way there which turned out to be some sort of modified dune buggy with enormous tires. They must have flown past us doing 60. We were inching along at 25, so we lost sight of them pretty quick. Just when the road seriously fell apart and we found ourselves inching up some fairly steep bluffs, the sky began to glow. We hadn't quite made it to our destination, but we looked at each other and then bolted down to the rim of a steep plateau overlooking the lake. We shot for at least an hour before all the light was gone from the sky. After shooting, we headed back to Page where we loaded up on a Jack In The Box breakfast before heading off to the North Rim.
