Midnight In The Valley

A few weeks ago, I finally had a Friday off and with rain and snow in the forecast for Yosemite Valley, I took off with high hopes of some late afternoon shots of a breaking storm. After a six hour drive and a frustrating afternoon of waiting for the sun to break through the clouds (which it finally did for all of 5 minutes before the hail started pelting our small but determined cadre of photographers at the tunnel) I settled in for a long night of waiting for the moon to break through the seemingly impenetrable wall of clouds surrounding the valley. Feeling discouraged as I had just narrowly missed a rainbow over Bridal Veil earlier that afternoon, I headed back up to the tunnel to check my messages (best cell signal in the valley, btw) and as I came around the corner, I noticed a shaft of moonlight cutting across El Capitan. I wheeled my Prius into the first available parking space and jumped out, frantically grabbing the D810 and my 24-70 lens. I had just managed to grab a couple of shots before the moon disappeared again. I spent the majority of the night attempting to catch the moon in different corners of the valley before finally grabbing a few zz's while waiting for the sun to rise followed by a long drive back to Orange County.
