Inside Devil's Punchbowl
Near Beverly Beach in Oregon is an interesting geologic formation called Devil's Punchbowl. The idea is simple, the rock under this area is basalt and other weaker rocks that get pounded by the sea. This was at once a sea cave and the roof fell in. No need to fear, this was about 18 million years ago.
Today it can be seen from the top, where is open and the waves beat the insides of this cauldron through two openings on the bottom. I had seen it form this vantage point a good number of times before, this trip was no different. However, when my wife and I peeked over the edge this time there were no waves inside. Even a few people! I did not know that, to the few that visit the beach next to the cavern at very, very low tide, you can actually go inside this usually submersed area! I ran so fast back to the car to drive to the beach that wife thought something was wrong. "We are going inside" I said. She thought I was kidding. To stand inside the bowl any other time would be certain death. Its strange in there, like being on the bottom of the ocean. The rocks are all slimy and sea creatures are everywhere like a giant tide pool. You get the feeling you are NOT supposed to be there and any moment a sneaker wave could take you you out for trespassing in Poseidon's lair. I certainly felt a weaklings desire to hurry when I was in there. You can see the scale of the place by finding the one human in the image, just to the left inside the cavern. I did not have to play with the color much, the red you see on the walls were there just like you see it in the image.
Lighting was a bear. Many layers blended. Let me know what you think. :)
