winged thing

I've now been told it is a tarantula hawk (pepsis wasp). It is called that because it hunts tarantulas. Now I am worried that I will find a tarantula in the backyard, which will not be okay with me.

 

Also, apparently if this thing stings you, hurts a lot.

 

Ugh.

 

Glad I knew none of that when taking the photo.
