From An Ohio Album # 63

I worked with a black guy, Ron, down in North Charleston. He said some of his African-American friends wouldn't eat watermelon, fearing they'd comfirm the stereotype. He said he told them to get over it. Watermelon is like a secular communion wafer in vintage vernacular photographs---only the eating of corn-on-the-cob comes close. Based on the evidence from my collection, there ought to be a white folks stereotype---they go after watermelon with some real downhome gusto.

(Ron also said he knew a Jewish girl who liked bacon. She would chew on a piece for the flavor and then spit it out---but that's another story.)
