Iceland Churches, Simple Beauty

Simple red roof Lutheran churches are found through out rural areas of Iceland. Most served rural farm and fishing settlements and some served as the local school house to. There are very simple inside and out . You might find a cross or one picture of Jesus Christ but other then that it hasi hard wood pews and a table for the bible. Many of these churches are abandoned now and sometimes a few sheep find a way to make home here. This one stands next to a little cemetery for the village of Helnar on the west coast. You can walk there from a roadside coffee house so see views of a volcano and trails that lead to a lovely stretch of ocean view on top of old lava beds. A wonderful walk easy for all ages ages takes about 1 hour.
