Microfiche and reader, Glen Waverley Library

Microfiche readers such as this magnified microform sheets to access cataloguing data. The catalogue was printed in small lettering on microform cards (known as microfiche, seen at right) and read via the microfiche reader (at left). The microfiche card was placed in a moveable cradle on the microfiche reader, which used a bulb to project the microform's content on to the screen. You navigated around the microform by moving the cradle. There were microform cards for authors, titles, subjects and collections.

They have also been used in libraries to access historical information, including newspaper archives and genealogical data.
