Im heutigen Erwerbsapfelanbau findet man meist nur noch sogenannte Niederstammformen, bei denen die "Baumkrone", also die kronentragenden Äste, schon in einer Höhe von etwa 40 bis 60 Zentimetern beginnen.
Die Bäume stehen so dicht nebeneinander, dass sie schon nach wenigen Jahren eine lockere Hecke bilden. Das Baumgerüst besteht dabei nur noch aus dem Stamm. Die Seitenachsen sind Fruchttriebe oder Fruchtäste, sodass die Früchte sehr nah am Stamm wachsen. Die Wuchshöhe der Bäume wird begrenzt, damit alle Früchte ohne Leiter von Hand erreicht werden können.
In today's commercial apple cultivation, one usually only finds so-called low-trunk forms, in which the "tree crown", i.e. the crown-bearing branches, begin at a height of around 40 to 60 centimeters.

The side axes are fruit shoots or fruit branches, so that the fruits grow very close to the trunk. The height of the trees is limited so that all fruits can be reached by hand without a ladder.
