Reflecting Back
This is one of my favorite shots, taken on Bishop's Beach in Homer, Alaska as well. We were sitting on the beach enjoying the sunshine and the cool breezes when I started snapping shots of everything around. I happenend to notice the mirror lenses that Tom had in his Rudy Project sunglasses, so I thought that I would capture a reflective image of what he was viewing right before him. I love the way that it turned out and cropped it closely so that the "view" was central to the shot.
I chose to share this shot today for a number of reasons.
First of all, tonight will be the "official" recognition banquet for his retirement from the Fire Department - after 29 years of service protecting the citizens of Dania Beach, though he retired on May 1st. The evening will be shared with another local fire department's retirees as well and is a show of brotherhood among their peers. It will be a proud moment for him, but one with mixed emotions I'm sure.
Of course, this is also the 9th anniversary of 9/11 terrorist attack, where many innocent Americans lost their lives, simply going about their business, unaware of the imminent events that would unfold. Of course, many of our firefighter heroes also lost their lives that day in the line of duty.
So for me this was a very much appropriate shot - it represents the reflecting back of the image in plain sight, but also the reflecting back of a career and the most horrific event in American history that I hope I ever have to witness.
My thoughts and prayers still go out to those who lost their lives, or lost loved ones, or in fact for all of us who were affected by that day. Let us not forget.
How appropriate I feel it is that this retirement banquet - a gathering of those retired, retiring, and even those somewhere along their fire department career - is being held on 9/11. I will be proud to be in such fine company tonight. Congratulations again Tom!
Wishing everyone peace on this very special day.
