Eye On The Prize
It's been a while since I've posted a bear ... and to celebrate the 5 week timeline before we return to Alaska, I thought that I would share one. :-)
At varying times during the summer the salmon run in the rivers, as they try to return to their spawning grounds as they complete their circle of life. Where there's salmon, you're bound to find bears, and my favorite bears are those brown bears that feed on that salmon.
They are such a thrill to watch as they make their way down to the river and watch the salmon as they swim by. Often they find their favorite fishing hole and jump right in ... the feast begins. In a short time, they're running up and down the river in hot pursuit, as they pounce and splash, more often than not, coming up with a fresh catch prize. I always find it incredible to watch as they display such skill in holding and manipulating the salmon, squeezing out the roe first (their favorite part), then stripping the skin off and so forth. They make quick work out of it too, then discard the remaining carcass into the river. The gulls then willingly scoop up whatever is left. It's quite the relationship they've got going on. LOL
Sometimes the bears are difficult to find and I sure hope that our luck repeats itself. Last year, there hadn't been many bears spotted on the Russian until the day we got there and only for a few days. Not sure where they go, but I always pray for their safety, as these bears are not always the most welcome visitors by the fisherman, of the human kind. I say that because everyone knows that these bears are the ultimate "fisherman"!
Until then, I will share a few more images every now and then from Alaska - one of my favorite places to visit in the world!
