Blame Sally is, left to right, Monica Pasqual, Jeri Jones, Renee Harcourt, and Pam Delgado, the baby boomers’ answer to grrrl power. Rob Strom is helping out on bass, but as the band’s designated newby (new boy), keeps his testosterone in check.
The Marin County anti-divas range in age from 44 to 53, and have frequented Placerville over the last couple years, developing a loyal local following along the way. Their flirtation with the indie-pop edges of Americana is grounded on imaginative songwriting, often both personal and political, and estrogen-fueled vocals that raise goose flesh.
Powerful arrangements give these delightfully normal-looking women control over the throttle on their sonic locomotive. Their best songs begin delicately, then build to a crescendo of overlapping vocals, powerful roots rhythms, off mic hollers, guitar leads and exquisite keyboard work by Pasqual, who bounces between piano and accordion.
