Monday: Backcountry Permits

About a half mile walk down this path from our campsite was the Apgar ranger station. We wanted to do some backcountry camping, but you basically need to show up 24 hours in advance, go over the map with a ranger, and plan a route then. Then, once the ranger is satisfied you won't die, he/she gives you your backcountry permit.

I don't feel like modifying a map of Glacier National Park to just show you the important-to-this-story bits, so if you want to refer to one, here is their official map.

Our plan was to start Tuesday at Chief Mountain Head, which is about 2 feet away from the Canadian border crossing (all the way to the right of the map), camp that night at Gable Creek (6 miles). Tuesday was our easy day- we'd hike 3.3 miles to Lake Elizabeth. And on Wednesday, we'd kill ourselves hiking 10.1 miles through Ptarmigan tunnel down to Many Glacier.
