Day 227- Myths
I would feel like a failure of a microbiologist if anyone on my friends list believed any of the myths and hype surrounding swine flu right now. So.
1. Paper masks will not protect you. Even if it was hermetically sealed to your face 24/7.
2. You cannot get the flu from eating contaminated pork. Even if it was uncooked, you would be susceptible to several health problems, but flu is not one of them. The flu virus needs to be in your lungs, not digested by your stomach acids.
3. The UN ruling to discourage travel to the US is bullshit. There are only 40 cases in the US, and no deaths.
4. China's ruling to stop import of pork from Mexico and the US is so much bullshit I can't even put together words that express how angry it makes me.
5. Antibiotics don't work on viruses. Ever. Not just "super resistant" viruses (I don't know what that even means). They're viruses. Not bacteria. Completely different life forms.
If you have any questions/concerns, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer. Or ask a virologist for you.
