Remains of Purple Toadflax (Linaria).
I first saw these two plants back in the spring of last year. They grew and flowered together throughout the summer. It's very likely, being such close neighbours, they cross-fertilised. And somewhere out there, their offspring are probably waiting to take on a new life.
Then, in the winter these two died back, leaving their upper-most leaves to curl inwards (purely coincidental, of course!) to form a symbol that is well-recognised and has universal meaning.
