Singing to butterflies

Anyone who has tried to photograph butterflies will know how very frustrating it can be. No matter how much you sing to them (thanks, Lucy) just when you get them in frame they're off... flying faster than you can hit the button, and you'll be lucky to catch a leg in frame!

Well, last Saturday was one of those lucky occasions when one of them sat still in various places and let me take lots of shots of it. I guess my song that day was a good one.

This is a small copper, a charming little package from Nature's great machinery - looking bright and new in the backlight. It's resting on the leaf of a thistle and warming itself with its wings open. Speaking of thistles, I was on the sharp end of Nature that day - thistled, brambled and mosquitoed rather too much!
