An unmistakable sign of spring

February 1st is my annual target date for the first day of spring in Berkeley. In past years I've noticed the mockingbirds start to sing and the first fruit trees start to bloom on this date.

This hummingbird building her nest was found on January 31st, right about on schedule (lets call it rounding error). On my bike ride to work that same day I made a point of looking and, sure enough, the first flower buds were popping on the plum trees.

I'm looking forward to watching the drama unfold over the next several weeks at this nest, and the many more signs of spring to come.
