Curry with curry
Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors in game 2 of the 2015 NBA Western Conference Finals as seen in a streetside restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
After more than 20 years of being a huge fan of the underachieving Golden State Warriors, I was extremely worried about my possibilities of watching their later round playoff games while traveling in Malaysia. They are considered the favorites to win the 2015 NBA championship. The last time they went this far in the playoffs was 1976.
My AirBnB host Gerard, way beyond the call of duty, went driving in the neighborhood looking for restaurants with flat screen TVs that might be willing to put on Astro 3, the channel that broadcasts NBA games here in Malaysia. Gerard sent me an email with Google Map links to 3 places and this was the first one I tried.
The game started at 9am here, and we had some excellent roti canai, a griddle-fried Indian Muslim flatbread which is a favorite of ours, with strong coffee for breakfast. Since we were here for about 3 hours, we also had lunch, an outstanding masala dosa, a delicious fish curry, and a perfectly prepared piece of fried chicken. The people working here were super-nice. The place is called Restoran RRR (Rahmat Rezeki Rakyat). It is a very popular local middle class eatery. Breakfast and lunch for the two of us cost a total of $6 US.
Some of the restaurant staff, observing my excitement, asked me which team I was rooting for and started to take an interest in the game. They seemed concerned that I might need medical assistance on the last possession of the game when James Harden of the Houston Rockets had the ball, down by one point, and could have tied or won the game. Luckily the Warriors trapped the ball and he was unable to get off a shot.
Feeling extremely fortunate about the whole experience, I thanked the restaurant staff profusely for letting me watch the game and left them a nice tip.
Notice the "Pray for MH370" sign next to the TV. That is the Malaysian Airlines flight that disappeared last year.
