Hope
"The Hope Diamond has existed for a billion years. Since it formed deep within the Earth...
...the Atlantic Ocean has opened, and closed, and opened again.
...the dinosaurs have come and gone.
...humans evolved and spread across the earth." -so says the sign in the exhibit.
But more beautiful still was this conversation:
"Mom, there has to be someone strong enough to crush coal into a diamond."
"No Zach, it takes millions of years to make a diamond deep in the earth."
"But Mom, diamonds are real. They really are."
"Yes, Zach."
"I want to give you one for your birthday."
and so, for my birthday, Zach and I went to see the single largest, flawless, diamond in the world. And it wsn't even close to the highlight of our trip.
