Sunset at Pier 45, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, Ca. USA
Looking north-west from Pier 43½, into a beautifully clear twilight.
The ship moored at Pier 45 is the National Liberty Ship Memorial, the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, one of only two (of 2,710) WWII Liberty ships still functional, and the last in her original configuration.
Launched in Portland, Maine in 1943 (having been built within 56 days), the O'Brien made seven wartime voyages, including eleven crossings of the English Channel supporting the D-Day invasion.
Rescued from the mothballed Reserve Fleet in 1979 and restored to an 'as new' state, the O'Brien regularly cruises in San Francisco Bay as a 'living museum' on the National Register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark, and even made an eighth voyage in 1994, across the Atlantic to be the sole large ship of the original D-Day armada to return for the 50th anniversary.
However, the ship's biggest public exposure was anonymous: as the filming location of engine room scenes in the 1997 film 'Titanic' !
Mount Tamalpais, the highest of the Marin Hills, is on the horizon, with the East Peak on the right and a weather radar dome visible on the West Peak. I'm afraid I can't name the nearer, cloud-covered hill overlooking the lights of Sausalito - anyone?
