A very bright friend postulated that the current zenith of human technological accomplishment is to be found in the ultra-small (e.g., microbiology, CRSPR, gene therapy, immunotherapy, microelectronics) or the ultra-large. This is an example of the latter. The metallurgy, engineering and control systems required to establish and maintain an enormous platform in position in 10,000' of ocean depth with its winds, waves and currents (and the occasional hurricane) is incomprehensible.
For all intents, it is miraculous.
In 1994, following its installation, I stood atop this structure and its platform.
