The East Range

Kirkstall Abbey

During the Middle Ages this room would have most probably been used for training monks or novices.

Many novices would have been young men of noble birth, they did however have to carry out the same work as the monks. After a year they would take their vows and become choir monks.

The sleeping quarters for the choir monks would have been on the first floor above the columns.

The columns, arches and vaulting survived for many years following the closure of the abbey, they were used as animal shelters by the local farmers.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.
