Ume (scientific name: Prunus mume, English: Japanese apricot) is a deciduous tall tree of the family Rosaceae, or its fruit. The cultivar that uses the fruit is treated as 'miume', and although immature ones are poisonous, they are processed into pickled plums and eaten. The whole tree and flowers are also objects of appreciation (hanaume), and there are plum groves and plum gardens in various places in Japan where cherry blossom viewing and plum festivals are held. Branches and bark are also used for dyeing.
