Archways.

The Milky Way arching over Wharariki Beach and the Archway Islands from my adventure out West on Friday night.

Shooting panoramas on beaches can be a challenge when it comes to shooting, and more importantly the editing. On this night ideally I would have shot this on an outgoing tide, but since I was there on an incoming tide, pretty sure I had no choice :) The reason behind choosing tides right, is because you want that portion of wet sand to reflect as many stars as possible! So shooting with an outgoing tide, will lessen the amount of waves that will cover your feet.

When it comes to editing panoramas shot from a beach, make sure you edit/blend the joins where the waves have moved between exposures, otherwise you will end up with an image with noticeable tectonic plates – not a good look.

And lastly, check those horizons! Ideally you'll want that horizon to be as straight as possible. Most of the stitching software allows you to move/warp/rotate your image to get the optimum horizon line – be sure to use this feature and not accept whatever the stitching pops out first!

Stitchers aren't perfect, only you have full control of how your panorama will look. Fix errors first, then make your final adjustments and lastly compose/crop.
