The Hatchet 1937

During routine repairs to the plaster on the front of the building, the decorative timberwork was revealed for the first time in over 100 years. It was decided to restore preserve the timbers rather than to cover them up again.

The discovery of the timbers also prevented the partial demolition of the building. Plans were afoot to demolish the building for the widening of Frogmore Street. There was also another proposal to set back the frontage by 11 feet. Neither of these came to fruition. The pub was again at risk of demolition in the 1960's, but common sense prevailed, Frogmore Street diverted around the building so that it now stands on it's own island.
