cosmos covered in ice. The "heat of fusion" prevents freezing of the last of summer's bounty. Strangely enough when water ( from a sprinkler in this case ) freezes it produces heat -likewise when the ice thaws - and as a result it can protect the plant itself from freezing. Go figure.
