Ladysbridge pillbox, Co. Cork
Despite Ireland's neutrality during the Second World War (which was called The Emergency), there was a distinct possibility that there might be an invasion from across the border from the North by the British (to take back the Treaty ports), or from the South by the Germans, using Ireland as a springboard from which to attack Britain. This pillbox dates from this time, and covered the approach roads from the coast through Ladysbridge. It has been cleared of the vegetation that previously almost hidden it from view, and painted. A good idea, as given the general standard of driving, and the bend in the road at this point...
