GWR Mark 3A SLEP sleeper carriage 10584 at London Paddington

The Mark 3 sleeping carriages were introduced between 1981 and 1983 with the batch of Mark 3 sleeping carriages being built by BREL at their Litchurch Lane Works in Derby. The Mark 3 sleeping carriages replaced the older fleet of Mark 1 sleeping carriages which dated from the late 1950s and early 1960s where the Mark 1 sleeping carriages carried asbestos and were in need of replacing, more so when an accidental fire occurred onboard a sleeping car train service formed of Mark 1 sleeper cars approaching Taunton in July 1978 leading to a tragic loss of lives. The Mark 3 sleeping carriages were a huge improvement on the Mark 1 sleeping carriages as the Mark 3 sleepers have much wider berths as well as being fitted with a smoke and fire alarm system, fire-retardant materials plus an emergency lighting system in each carriage.
