Station sign at Northolt

Northolt station is served by the Central Line's West Ruislip branch, with the town of Northolt being famous for the large RAF aerodrome alongside the A40 Western Avenue as well as the memorial to the battalion of Polish airmen who died fighting with the Royal Air Force during World War 2. Also running alongside Northolt Central Line station is the former BR Western Region main line track which ran from London Paddington up to Birmingham, with this track meeting up with the Chiltern Railways line from London Marylebone and Wembley at South Ruislip. This main line through Greenford and Northolt was once used by express trains from London Paddington travelling out to the likes of Birmingham Snow Hill, Chester General and Birkenhead Woodside up until 1967 when these services were withdrawn, leaving the track reduced to a mere single line and used only infrequently by the odd refuse container train bound for the Suez waste terminal in South Ruislip.
