Essroc Silos
by Mike Falkner
This splendid location overlooking Toronto from the Western Portlands was first constructed in 1920 as the Century Coal Company to store shiploads of coal for use in firing coal boilers across the city for industrial steam and residential heating.
As coal power gave way to oil, natural gas and electrical heating, the site was re-purposed by the Lake Ontario Portland Cement Company for distribution of the essential building material brought in by ship from Picton, Ontario.
The complex was later acquired by the ESSROC Italcementi Group and continued operations until 2014 when a new complex was constructed in the East Portlands as part of long-term Toronto revitalization efforts underway in the Cherry St area.
