Hydro Midtown Tunnel Project

by Mike Falkner

This $115M project serves to replace aging underground power infrastructure from 1956 which is nearing end-of-life, while adding additional capacity for future growth in the downtown core. This new 2.4 kilometer tunnel is 3 meters wide, 60 meters underground and runs from Bayview Avenue to Yonge Street. This hidden industrial monument houses six 115KV high-voltage cables that carry 100 megawatts of power into the city, enough electricity to power 25,000 homes. The tunneling operation was conducted by a purpose built Technicore 120-tonne Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which was 80 meters in length.
