by Mike Falkner
Fort 7 is an old city perimeter fortress located on the outskirts of Antwerp. Construction began in 1859 and it was completed in 1864. It was part of a defensive system of 8 forts surrounding the southern end of the city.
During the Second World War, the fort served as an ammunition depot for the German Luftwaffe in occupied Belgium. he Nazi fort commander had all the bombs and V2 warheads dumped into the surrounding moat to avoid capture by the liberating forces. Some of the items remain in the water today.
