Sidbrook Hospital

Sidbrook Private Chronic Hospital

Referred to as 'Sidbrook' due to its most recent use as a Private Hospital, this is one of Cobourg's best known Heritage buildings.

This location is an interesting example of the Beaux Arts Classical style, a popular style in America toward the close of the 19th century.

Originally constructed as a two story summer house in 1857, it underwent several major renovations resulting in the structure we have today. The last major renovation was undertaken in 1901 by William Abbott, a wealthy industrialist from Pittsburgh. This work included of addition of a third floor, roof alterations and the Corinthian Porch in front.

It became a private hospital in 1952 and closed in 2002.

Sidbrook is a rare surviving example of an early Victorian villa in Cobourg and also an example of the grand summer houses that once lined Cobourg streets.
