The grave marker of Philibert Aspairt.
The famous catacomb legend is told as such:
One day in November 1793, Philibert Aspairt, door keeper of the Val-de-Grâce hospital during the disturbed times of the French Revolution, ventured into the quarries by taking a staircase located in the hospital's court. It is rumored that he was searching for the treasure of Chartreux's monks. It is widely accepted that the 'treasure' was actually bottles of Chartreuse liqour, stored in the cellars of the Carthusian convent (located under the Jardin du Luxembourg).
Aspairt was never seen alive again. His fate was unknown until 1804, 11 years later, when his remains were discovered in one of the quarry galleries. He was identified by the key ring of the Val-de-Grâce hanging from his belt. The exact cause of his death was never determined. He was buried where his body was found.
The story may or may not be true...
