Switching in a darkening rain

Rio Grande’s Creede Local switches the mill at South Fork, Colorado, on the eve of a July 1984 summer day in the far western edge of the San Luis Valley. D&RGW GP30 No. 3010 pauses while spotting an empty cut of Santa Fe wood chip cars. The sun has set and everything is glossy wet as an afternoon rain continues while dusk settles in. As soon as the work is done, the crew will be happy to get out of the weather, gather up the loads and head back to Alamosa.
