Süleymaniye and Rüstem Pasha Mosques
The Süleymaniye Mosque was built on the order of Sultan Suleiman I (Suleiman the Magnificent) from 1550 to 1558; Ottoman imperial architect Mimar Sinan intended it to be an architectural counterpoint to the Hagia Sophia. The Rüstem Pasha Mosque was designed by Sinan for Suleiman's stepson Grand Vizier Damat Rüstem Pasha and was built from 1561 to 1563.
