Brocken spectre.

Coming across a Brocken Spectre whilst out on the hills is a relatively rare occurrence and one I haven't seen often.

This rather poor image captures one observed whilst crossing Esk Pike.

For those who may not be aware, a Brocken Spectre is formed when the sun is over the shoulder of the hiker and projects their magnified shadow on to clouds below. The moisture in the clouds helps create a circular rainbow around the shadow.

You don't always have to climb to see one as such effects can also be seen from an aircraft when its shadow is projected onto clouds below.
