2018 ChE Thurber Diagnostic Pill

University of Michigan researchers have developed a diagnostic pill to enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis of breast cancer by moving imaging to the molecular level.

This tissue slide shows the distribution of integrin-targeting probes at microscopy resolution. Functional blood vessels in these human tumor xenografts are labeled in blue. A non-targeted fluorescent dye (green) does not bind to the tissue and distributes mainly in necrotic (dead) regions at the center of the tumor or in surrounding non-cancerous tissue. The integrin-targeted probe (red) binds specifically to the cells within the tumor for more accurate imaging of the molecular expression.

The research was performed under the direction of Greg Thurber, an assistant professor in chemical engineering.
