Helping Themselves

A small two room grade school in a small town down in Oaxaca. The 'hill' in the backdrop is a dump. Some of the people in the town work by picking their way through the garbage to salvage anything of value.

The town is very poor and cannot afford to keep the school open so the children started growing tomatoes to sell to fund the school and pay the teachers. Problem is that tomatoes are a water heavy crop and they don't have enough water to grow them.

The friends that we were traveling with are part of an organization that goes to these rural communities and buys the mezcal they make, bring it up to the United States and sell it. The profits from the sales are then sent back to the communities in Mexico to build schools and civic buildings and projects. When my friends heard of this school - they reached out and now the kids are growing agave plants that do well in dry conditions and then they sell the plants to my friend and the school stays open. Agave plants are in high demand and used to make mezcal.

Happy Thursday to you.
