LEGO Rogue One : A Star Wars Story Minifigures

Finally, my last project of 2016, for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I had been looking forward to doing this since the film was announced, and my god the film is amazing. Just absolutely incredible and everything I hoped it would be. So, following the release of Doctor Strange, I immediately got to work on the undertaking of completing 10 custom minifigures in only a month and a half.

So first off, HUGE thanks to AndrewVxtc for all of his hard work on K-2SO and Saw Gerrera’s hair sculpt. If he and I didn’t collaborate on the two of them, this set wouldn’t have been done in time. The sculpting, casting, and modding he was able to pull off in the final week and a half leading up to the film was insane, and again I can’t thank him enough!!

One last note before we get started, if you’ve seen the showcase video already, you’ll definitely notice some changes here. First one being the addition of Vader’s red lenses, I had no idea they would be so apparent in his helmet until I saw the film. Galen Erso’s hair is now a sanded Anakin hairpiece too, because the only shot I had to go off of with his hairstyle before seeing the film…his hair was wet. Lastly, I changed the tip of Chirrut’s staff in favor of a more accurate piece.

Alright, so continuing the “bullet point” concept that I started with Doctor Strange, I’ll be covering all of the necessary info instead of writing a novel:

**WORK IN PROGRESS**

Jyn Erso:

●Fully painted face to match the likeness of Felicity Jones.

●Heavily modded ponytail hairpiece, which can’t be seen in this photo lol.

●Painted and modified CapeMadness AR Jacket with 3D pockets to bring out more detail.

●Painted Arealight curved torso.

●Painted pair of TinyTactical glove tops.

●A180 pistol made from a standard Lego blaster.

●Painted holster glued to her right leg.

●Holster strap made from CapeMadness fabric, in order to prevent the effect of a painted strap separating when bending the legs.

●And of course, the Death Star plans themselves in the form of the data tapes they’re originally stored on. Made from a 1x1 black tile, bits of rubber, photo paper, and the top half of a Lego key ring.

Cassian Andor:

●Entire head taken from Lego’s minifig, they already printed a fantastic likeness, and I also agree with the hairpiece choice.

●Painted CapeMadness jacket, it originally started out as a trench coat actually, and it also features 3D elements, again to emphasize the extra detail.

●Same strap as Jyn, with a different set of detail, also connected to a painted holster on his right leg.

●Painted BrickArms DH-17, even though he didn’t end up using one in the movie… ._.

●Painted pair of Tiny Tactical sleeve cuffs.

K-2SO:

Again, major thanks goes out to Andrew and the fast paced work he did to pull this off in time. Sure, this figure was a collaborative effort, but he really did most of the work. I just did a few repairs and painted the whole thing for 12 hours.

●Andrew cut Lego’s K2 body in half, removed the shoulder pegs, and drilled out the area on both sides to make way for the magnets he glued in their place.

●After sculpting both sections of one arm, Andrew made two casts of it in order to preserve the original sculpt.

●He then glued two magnets to the bottom of each bicep, and one to the top of each forearm. After that, a Lego droid hand to the bottom of each forearm as well.

●Andrew also sculpted and made casts of K2’s lower torso and waist parts.

●Same as the legs, Andrew also sculpted and made casts of K2’s legs.

●He also ran a piece of a toothpick through the waist piece, and drilled holes through both thighs to make them bend.

●Lastly, Andrew sculpted onto K2’s back, and provided two bits of wires to be glued in place to make for the antennas.

Chirrut Îmwe:

●I'm one with the force, and the force is with me.

●Head taken from Lego’s official Chirrut, with the widow’s peak removed, and his eyes repainted.

●Painted torso features straps that wrap around the torso, and connect to the painted cape on his back.

●His left arm features a painted strap, and a sculpted gauntlet piece.

●Painted tube piece glued to the bottom of his torso, was cut from a Lego plant piece.

●Modified and painted CapeMadness waist capes, with the sculpted and (also painted) panel glued onto the outer cape.

●Took a razor blade to a CMF Series 2 Roman spear to make his staff before painting it.

●Removed the top piece from the 3.75 inch Hasbro Chirrut staff and glued onto my Lego version here.

●Chirrut’s got Death Star Trooper legs underneath his waist capes, with a pair of painted shoes.

Baze Malbus:

●My god this figure was a f***ing bitch to make.

●As planned since like forever ago, I used the Thorin hairpiece from The Hobbit sets.

●Canister on his back was made using paper for the mainframe, rubber, a smooth 1x1 tile, the bottom of an antenna piece, a portion of a skeleton arm, and a lot of ProCreate. Also, a ton of paint of course.

●Putting the whole thing together onto the hairpiece without cutting any of it out made for a real challenge. The hairpiece is still intact underneath it all, but I managed to make the entire canister look like a separate piece.

●The ammo chain, that took five attempts to get right, is made from two curved pieces of photo paper, and sandwiched bits of rubber. It’s connected to his canister and blaster.

●His heavy repeater cannon is a heavily modded M14 EBR Sniper from CombatBrick, with an optic from TinyTactical, all painted with accurate detail and a lot of weathering.

●Everything on Baze’s torso was sculpted, the bits on his torso were made from rubber, and a piece of Christmas wire was used too.

●Aside from that, he’s got a custom knee pad, sculpted armor by his foot, custom wrist pieces, and a fair amount of weathering.

●After the whole process, I’m glad he turned out looking pretty good.

Bodhi Rook:

●Kept Lego’s head, even though I wouldn’t have necessarily gone with a smile, there’s still no denying the likeness.

●Painted Kanan hairpiece, with modded Lego goggles glued on, and a strap connected to them.

●Bodhi’s vest was made from precisely cut CapeMadness fabric, before being glued on and painted.

●The cylindrical piece on his torso was made from a necklace I bought at Michaels.

●All pouches were made from rubber, with additional strips of paper glued onto each one to add depth.

●By far the most time consuming task with Bodhi were his Imperial shoulder patches, and I wasn’t thrilled when I realize he had two of them after painting the first lol.

●Basic pocket painted onto his right arm, and the pouch on his left arm is made from paper with 4 individual bits of wire glued into to portray his tools.

●Painted pair of Tiny Tactical cuffs, like Cassian.

●Additional pieces of CapeMadness fabric were glued onto the pouches on the back of his vest to portray his laces.

●Painted screwdriver piece, that I like to think of as…a splicer or something… :P

●Basic pockets painted onto his legs, which were challenging to do without having sanded the legs first.

Saw Gerrera:

Again with Saw here, massive thanks to AndrewVxtc for the two hours of work he did on Saw’s hairpiece and beard while we were on a Skype call! I was having a ton of trouble with my attempts at it, and I was super relieved when he was alright with the extra bit of work!

●The hair and beard are painted in a base color of black, with a lot of dark gray dry brushing.

●Fully painted face to match the likeness of Forest Whitaker, and I surprisingly got it on the first try.

●His torso armor, man, a ton of work went into it. It started out as CMF Space Marine armor, and I absolutely went to town on the thing with a drill, sanded the crap out of it, sculpted the armor on his left shoulder, and I also sculpted onto the front of it to create a flat surface.

●Here’s the list of what was glued on afterwards: Bits of the same necklace used on Bodhi, a small ring, the bottom of a Lego antenna (sanded), strap made from more CapeMadness fabric, bits of a Lego plant piece, Christmas wire, paper, and plenty of rubber.

●His belt was also made from the same rubber material.

●Pair of TinyTactical cuffs painted in a gunmetal color.

●Very similar wire to the kind of used on K2’s antennas was used on Saw’s left arm.

●Cybernetic foot, scaled to the size of a standard Lego foot. It was made from again, the same rubber stuff, paper, more Lego plant pieces, and a bit of dried ProCreate.

●And holy crap that was a tough mod, my first time cutting a minifig leg in half! Well, I actually used a drill but whatever :P

●Finally, his staff is made from a standard 6L stop ring rod, with the top cut off, and the whole thing painted up.

FIRST EVER CLONE WARS-ORIGINATING CHARACTER TO MAKE IT TO A LIVE ACTION FILM WOOOOOO!!!!!……sorry lol

Galen Erso:

●His entire painted face and torso design is taken directly from a sketch Tom Beke did when the final trailer came out. I thought it was great, and knew I probably couldn’t come up with anything better!

●As mentioned above, I changed his hairpiece from Sabine hair to a sanded Anakin hairpiece after briefly seeing his hair actually dry during the movie.

●I realize he has a symbol on his right shoulder after having seen the film, but there still isn’t any decent reference of it to pull from to my knowledge.

●Aside from that, I painted his collar, he’s got minimal detail on his double molded legs, and basic lines on his back as well.

●Also, I’m so damn glad I listened to Catalyst before seeing Rogue One. Already knowing Galen and his wife Lyra before going in made their scenes mean so much more.

Director Krennic:

●Kept Lego’s entire head, but changed his hair and eyebrow color.

●Trimmed CapeMadness Mid Cape.

●Also kept Lego’s torso, however I made my own rank plaque, belt buckle, and I also painted/extended his belt all the way around his torso.

●Pair of TinyTactical glove tops.

●Painted and modified CapeMadness waist cape, with his holster also painted on.

●Krennic’s DT-29 heavy blaster pistol is made from a heavily modded BrickArms M1911 V2, a LittleArmsShop Revolt Rifle scope, a LittleArmsShop DC-17 barrel, and a couple of chopped up bits of plant pieces.

●He’s also got a pair of painted legs, with his glossy Imperial boots painted on too.

Darth Vader:

●LAWD VADAH

●Standard Vader helmet, with minimal detail on the front, and again I recently made his lenses red.

●His robes were made from a heavily modified CapeMadness trench coat, and glued into place before painting clothing wrinkles.

●Vader’s chest piece started off as paper, and each black stripe was an individual piece before being glued on and painted.

●All other elements on his torso were made from the same rubber material once again that was used on various other things mentioned above.

●I’m too tired to finish the rest of this at the moment
