Sustainable architecture part II (Split)

If you ever get the chance to visit Croatia and think that all you need to see is Dubrovnik, allow me to offer a little advice...

 

If you can, take a ferry ride down the Dalmatian coast to Split... the journey is stunningly beautiful, and Split is a wonderful town. Here you see the remains of a Roman Palace incorporated into more recent (comparatively) urban fabric - the whole urban centre is full of wonderful surprises such as this. It is still an active town (unlike Dubrovnik) with a life outside of the demands of the tourist industry (complete with a smelly fish market). If you only get to visit one place in Croatia, skip the Disneyfied Dubrovnik, or the capital Zagreb, and head to Split...
